Sort the Bot

Sort the Bot is a short reflex game about doing one simple thing while the definition of “correct” keeps moving. Bits fall from the top of the screen, three bins wait at the bottom, and a banner tells you which property decides where each bit goes.

Then, every few seconds, the banner changes.

How to play

1. Press Space or tap Start.
2. Move with A / D or the left and right arrow keys. On touch, use the buttons at the bottom.
3. Catch a falling bit by standing under it.
4. Drop it into the bin that matches the current rule shown in the banner.

The actual difficulty

The falling speed is not what makes this hard. What makes it hard is that your brain builds a shortcut — “blue goes right” — within about four seconds, and that shortcut keeps firing for a second or two after the rule has changed. Psychologists call the cost of that switch task-switching overhead; here it costs you a run.

The counter-intuitive advice is to deliberately avoid getting comfortable. Players who keep glancing at the banner even when they “know” the rule outperform players who lock in and trust their pattern. The moment you stop reading is the moment the game beats you.

Waves

Each wave raises the fall speed but leaves the rule timer alone. That means the early game tests your hands and the late game tests your attention — a different skill, arriving without announcement, which is roughly the point.

Tips

• Read the banner, not the bits. The instinct to sort by colour survives long after the rule has changed to shape, and that instinct is what ends runs.
• The moment right after a rule flip is the most dangerous. Consider dropping the bit you are holding rather than trying to re-sort it in flight.
• Park near the middle bin between catches. It halves the worst-case distance to any other bin.
• Speed increases per wave but the rule-change interval does not, so later waves are less about reaction time and more about not letting the old rule stick in your head.
