Mirror Duel
Duel a ghost of your own last run. Lose, and that run becomes the next opponent.
Mirror Duel is a one-screen arena fight with a single twist: there is no AI. Your opponent is a recording of one of your own previous runs, played back flipped along the vertical axis.
The first duel is against a near-harmless starter tape. Every time you die, that run is saved — and the next duel plays it back at you. Win often enough and you start facing a mirrored version of your best self, which is exactly as uncomfortable as it sounds.
How to play
- Press Space (or tap Start) to begin a duel.
- Move with WASD or the arrow keys. On a touch screen, use the stick in the bottom-left corner.
- Hold Space or the fire button to shoot. Shots travel across the arena and both fighters can be hit.
- Reduce the ghost to zero health to win. If it reduces you first, your run is taped and becomes the next opponent.
Why the mirror matters
Most arena games ask you to learn an opponent’s patterns. Mirror Duel asks you to unlearn your own. The ghost has no reactions and no decision-making — it simply replays inputs. That means it can never adapt to you, but it also means it embodies every bad habit you have: the corner you always retreat to, the rhythm you always fire on, the direction you always dodge.
The mirroring is the part that gets people. Muscle memory built on “dodge right” comes back at you as “dodge left,” so your instincts arrive half a beat out of alignment. Beating a strong ghost usually means deliberately playing against your own preferences for a round.
Rounds are short — a minute or two — and a loss costs nothing except a slightly better opponent next time.
Tips
- Your ghost cannot improvise. Whatever you did last round is exactly what it will do this round — so the fastest way to beat it is to do something you have never done.
- Because the ghost is mirrored, a habit like always circling left becomes a habit of always circling right. Break symmetry early and the mirror stops predicting you.
- Firing while stationary is the single most punished habit. The ghost records your standstill and shoots the spot you like to stand in.
- A sloppy win still gets recorded. If you scrape through a round with bad movement, your next opponent inherits that bad movement — and it will be easy. Farm a clean run when you want a hard one.
Questions
Does Mirror Duel have multiplayer?
No. The second fighter is always a recording of one of your own earlier runs, played back mirrored. Everything runs locally in your browser with no server and no other players.
Where are my recorded runs stored?
In your browser only. The game makes no network requests at all, so clearing your browser data resets your ghost library.
Can I play Mirror Duel on a phone?
Yes. A virtual stick appears on the left and a fire button on the right when you play on a touch screen.
Why does the ghost feel harder some rounds than others?
Because it is only ever as good as the run it was taped from. Beat the game with a very clean run and you have just built yourself a very difficult opponent.
