How to win at 2048 — the corner strategy, explained properly

Most people who play 2048 plateau somewhere around 512. They understand the rules perfectly, they can see the merges available, and they still lose. The gap between 512 and 2048 is almost never about spotting merges — it is about a single structural decision most players never make.

The problem with playing well move-by-move

2048 punishes greedy play in a specific way. Every swipe moves every tile, so a move that creates a good merge on one side of the board also rearranges the other side. Playing the best-looking move each turn produces a board where large tiles end up scattered, and scattered large tiles can never combine.

Two tiles can only merge if they are adjacent with nothing between them. So a 256 in the middle of the board is not just taking up a square — it is a permanent obstacle unless its partner happens to arrive on exactly the right side of it.

The corner rule

Pick a corner. Put your largest tile there. Never let it leave.

That is the whole strategy, and it works for a reason that is easy to state: a tile in the corner has only two exposed sides instead of four. Everything else you build can queue up beside it in one direction, and merges cascade along that queue instead of happening one at a time in random places.

In practice, committing to a corner means committing to two directions. If your anchor is bottom-left, you play left and down. Right and up are emergencies, used only when neither of your two directions changes anything.

The moment you swipe up with a bottom-left anchor, your big tile can be pulled off the bottom row and a new tile can spawn underneath it. Recovering from that costs more moves than the merge you gained.

Keep the anchor row full

The second habit is less obvious and does almost as much work: keep the row containing your anchor tile completely filled.

A gap in that row is where a new 2 spawns, and a 2 wedged between your 512 and your 256 separates them until you can clear it — which usually requires a move in a direction you have been avoiding. Most corner strategies fail here rather than at the corner itself.

Building a snake

Once the corner is stable, the next structure to aim for is a snake: descending values along the bottom row, then continuing in reverse along the row above.

The value of this shape is that merges chain. When your 128 becomes a 256, the existing 256 is directly beside it, so it merges immediately, and the 512 beside that may follow. A single well-timed move can collapse three levels of the snake at once.

Building the snake means resisting a specific temptation: merging tiles as soon as you can. A 64 merged early into a 128 that sits in the wrong place is worse than two 64s sitting in the right order.

What to do when the board fills up

Everyone reaches a position where the board is nearly full and no good move exists. The correct response is not to panic-swipe.

Work out which of your two directions still changes something, take it, and look at what spawned. Very often one forced move opens two merges you could not see before. The runs that end badly are the ones where a player makes three fast moves in the emergency directions and destroys the corner structure in the process.

If you genuinely must break the corner, break it in the direction that keeps your anchor’s row intact — usually along the anchor’s edge rather than away from it.

Three boards, three different problems

The 5×5 board has eleven extra squares, which changes the game from survival to construction. Corner discipline still applies but mistakes are recoverable, so it is the best board on which to learn the snake without a run ending every ninety seconds.

The 3×3 board is nearly unforgiving. With only nine squares, one careless swipe genuinely ends the game, which is why its goal tile is 512 rather than 2048.

The classic 4×4 sits in between, and it is the one where the corner rule is neither optional nor sufficient — you also need the anchor row and the snake. That combination is what takes people past 512.
