Block Puzzle removes everything that makes falling-block games stressful. Nothing drops, nothing is timed, and a placed shape stays exactly where you put it. What is left is a pure planning problem — and a surprisingly unforgiving one.

You do not lose because the board fills up. You lose because it fills up in the wrong shape.

The 3×3 rule

Keep a clear three-by-three area somewhere on the board at all times.

The nine-square block is one of nineteen shapes in the deal, which means you will see several per game, and it needs a completely empty 3×3 region. If it arrives and there is nowhere to put it, you have burned one of your three shapes — and if the other two also do not fit, the game is over.

Almost every run that ends earlier than it should ends this way. Players notice the board getting full and start placing defensively, but they defend total space rather than shaped space, and the 3×3 quietly disappears.

Practical version: pick a corner region early and treat it as reserved. Only build into it when you are clearing a line by doing so.

Fill outward-in

Space against a wall is worth less than space in the middle, because a wall square can only be approached from fewer directions.

So place your long pieces along the edges early, and keep the central region open. This is the opposite of the instinct most people have, which is to build outward from the middle because it feels tidier.

The corollary is that single stray squares are expensive. A lone gap left in a row you were otherwise completing costs you that row until a 1×1 happens to appear — and the 1×1 is one shape among nineteen. Leaving a two-wide gap is much better than leaving two one-wide gaps in different rows.

Look at all three before placing any

The three shapes are dealt together, and the order you place them in frequently decides whether the third fits at all.

The common mistake is placing the easy one first — the small shape that fits anywhere — and then discovering that the five-long bar has nowhere to go. Place the most constrained shape first: the big square, the long bars, the shapes with the fewest legal positions. The small ones will still have somewhere to go afterwards.

This one habit is probably worth more than everything else on this page.

Score comes from multiples

Clearing lines scores ten points times the square of the number cleared at once. So one line is 10, two simultaneously is 40, three is 90.

That non-linearity is worth playing for. If you can see a row that needs one more square and a column that needs one more square, and a single shape completes both, that placement is worth four times what two separate clears would be.

It is also worth holding a nearly-complete row for a turn when you can see the piece that finishes it alongside another that sets up a second line. Since nothing is timed, waiting costs you only board space.

Rotation, and why there is none

Shapes cannot be rotated here. That is a deliberate design decision rather than a missing feature.

With free rotation almost any shape fits almost anywhere, and the puzzle collapses — you would essentially never be unable to place something. Both orientations of each shape appear in the deal instead, which keeps the constraint real while making sure no shape is permanently unplayable.

The result is a game where the interesting decision is where, not how.
